THE CORAL TRIANGLE

What is The Coral Triangle?

The Coral Triangle, the global centre of marine biodiversity, is a 6 million km2 area spanning Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and the Solomon Islands.

Within this nursery of the seas live 76% of the world’s coral species, 6 of the world’s 7 marine turtle species, and at least 2,228 reef fish species.

As result of the abundance of marine life, the Coral Triangle has earned names such as “the nursery of the seas” from WWF.

Furthermore, it has some of the world’s largest mangrove forests, and has been dubbed Ocean Conservancy as the ‘Amazon of the Seas’. Helping to sustain sea life already listed, these mangroves are a vital carbon sink, as “the most carbon-rich forest in the Tropics”.

And on land, the region sustains life for millions of people and indigenous communities.

What is the problem?

The Coral Triangle, the “nursery of the seas” is under siege by over 30 proposed LNG projects that represent a new wave of energy imperialism. Marketed by the Global North as “energy security,” this expansion is actually a methane bomb 80 times more potent than CO2, locking Southeast Asia into 20-year “energy slavery” contracts and debt. This industrialization threatens 76% of the world’s coral species and the food security of 120 million people, trading global biodiversity and local sovereignty for corporate profit.

The insurance industry is the critical enabler of this destruction. Firms like AXA and AIG provide the essential “license to operate, underwriting death projects that displace Indigenous communities and devastate marine life through toxic dumping and seismic noise. Because no fossil fuel project can function without a policy, insurance is the weak link. To insure the Coral Triangle’s destruction is to underwrite global climate collapse; cutting this financial lifeline is the only way to protect our survival.

How can we stop this?

Our strategy is simple: Make the Coral Triangle uninsurable.

We Know It Works:

Since 2019, our movement has grown from local UK protests to a global coalition. We have completed nearly 200 actions, and the industry is already buckling:

  • Direct Impact: In May 2026, global pressure forced a human rights complaint against Allianz for its role in LNG terminals. From Nigerian children marching on AXA offices to Scottish activists targeting local branches, we are exposing their dirty secret.
  • Recent Wins: Under pressure, Allianz and Aviva dropped Elbit Systems (arms), while Hannover Re and Zurich rejected deep-sea mining.

The Better Path:

We don’t need “transition” gas. In 2026, the energy crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has proven that fossil fuels are a liability. Vietnam and the Philippines are already leading an electrification drive with renewables that are cheaper, safer, and carry no war risk premium.

June: Month of Action:

This June, we are taking the fight to the streets. We are calling on all groups to plan a direct action to make fossil gas in the Coral Triangle a reputational nightmare for every insurer involved.

No Insurance = No Project.

No Project = Survival.
